How to choose a deck builder in Charlotte
1. Check the license
In North Carolina, contractors on larger residential projects must hold a general contractor license from the NC Licensing Board for General Contractors. You can look up any builder by name on the board's website before you sign. Ask for proof of liability insurance too.
2. Ask who pulls the permit
Most decks in Charlotte need a building permit and inspections through Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement. A good builder pulls the permit in their own name and schedules the inspections. If a contractor asks you to pull it yourself, or says you do not need one, keep looking.
3. Decide on composite or wood
Pressure-treated pine costs less up front but needs cleaning and sealing every year or two in Charlotte's humid summers. Composite decking like Trex costs more to install, does not need staining, and carries manufacturer warranties of 25 years or more depending on the line. Ask the builder to price both so you can compare.
4. Look at the frame, not just the boards
The substructure carries the deck for decades. Ask what lumber grade or framing system they use, how joists are spaced, and how the ledger attaches to your house. A builder who explains this clearly knows what they are doing.
5. Get the warranty in writing
There are two warranties on a composite deck: the manufacturer's on the material and the builder's on the labor. Make sure the builder's workmanship warranty is written into the contract, with how long it lasts.
6. Read recent reviews
Google reviews from the last year tell you more than a gallery of old photos. Look for reviews that mention the crew, the cleanup and how problems were handled after the build.
